Opinions about immigration and minorities in Argentina
6 out of 10 Argentinians have a positive opinion about immigrants, although the perception varies considerably depending on the country or region of origin.
The Social Research Centre (CIS) UADE – Voices! conducted a national public opinion study with the aim of exploring the views of Argentinians in relation to immigration and foreign minorities living in the country.
Some findings of the study:
- The majority, 6 out of 10, have a positive opinion about immigrants, while 3 out of 10 have a negative image especially in Greater Buenos Aires (almost 5 out of 10).
- It is the Europeans who generate the greatest acceptance (64% of positive opinions). Africans (51%) and Bolivians (52%) rank second, while Colombians and Peruvians receive the highest levels of criticism (3 out of 10 have a bad image about them).
- The majority think that immigrants in Argentina are discriminated against or marginalized (65%).
- 4 out of 10 Argentinians have an immigrant friend or neighboiur. Another 2 out of 10 have a co-worker or foreign relative living in the country.
